The Situation
Following a direct hit from an EF-3 tornado, an agricultural equipment manufacturer sustained widespread damage across a one-mile industrial campus. Manufacturing machinery and showroom equipment were dispersed across multiple buildings and staging areas, with initial insurance loss estimates exceeding $100 million and machinery and equipment losses projected to surpass $50 million.
Equipment Impacted
- Production Manufacturing Machinery
- Finished Agricultural Machinery
Value-Driven Solutions
Inventory and Damage Assessment
ILC conducted extensive site inspections across multiple campus structures to document more than 1,700 capital machinery and equipment assets. The evaluation included assessing structural impacts, determining damage severity, and identifying equipment that remained recoverable or repairable.
Strategy for Recovery
Efforts were coordinated to move usable and repairable machinery and equipment into temporary work cells in less-affected facilities. At the same time, finished agricultural machinery stored outdoors was assessed to determine which items could be sold and distributed immediately.
Loss Investigation and BI Mitigation
Working with the insured, recovery plans were developed to prioritize salvage, equipment restoration, and remediation sequencing across the campus to accelerate recovery, reduce extended downtime, and minimize BI.
The Results
Significant Machinery Loss Reduction
Intensive recovery and restoration efforts reduced the initial machinery and equipment rough order of magnitude loss estimate by more than $20 million.
Accelerated Production and Distribution Recovery
Identifying and relocating recoverable manufacturing equipment facilitated the swift resumption of production and the establishment of temporary work areas.
Minimized BI and Revenue Impact
Identification of unimpacted finished agricultural machinery allowed shipment and distribution operations to resume within days of the tornado event, helping stabilize business operations and reduce financial losses.
